In a salt electrolysis system, a small amount of salt is added to the pool water, typically between 1.5 and 5 g/L. This salt is sodium chloride (NaCl). Inside the electrolytic cell, the dissolved salt is broken down by an electric current: sodium ions (Na⁺) on one side and chlorine gas (Cl₂) on the other，This chlorine immediately reacts with the water to form hypochlorous acid (HOCl),  Hypochlorous acid disinfects the water by destroying microbes, algae and impurities.
